Though I started out as a painter many years ago, I
discovered the art of rug hooking by chance and never left it.
I think of my hooked wall hangings as paintings in fiber.
My images fall into two categories – people and places.
The combinations of people – few or many- interest me with their repeated
design elements and variations. By simplifying, I try to capture the essence of
who they are. Architectural elements call me and again I am fascinated with
design combinations and textural surfaces. The textural surfaces made of woolen
material (tweeds, flat colors, hand dyed wools) and other materials (handspun
yarn, commercial yarn, non-woolen fabrics) give the images dimension. Subtle color combinations and tactile surfaces create an imaginative statement, made to entice the viewer to reflect on the scene.
My studio is at the MontpelierArts Center in Laurel, Maryland. I teach rug hooking classes and
workshops in Laurel and at various rug hooking workshops and seminars throughout the Northeast and Canada
“Roslyn Logsdon: People and Places” is a book I wrote in 1998 and I have had my work published in books and
magazines. My work has been shown in many exhibits throughout the United States.
In the last few years, my wall hangings have been displayed in Artspace, Raleigh, NC; Cahoon Museum, Cotuit, MA;
Gallery 510, Decatur, IL; Textile Center of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN; Lexington Art League, Lexington, KY;
Glenview Mansion, Rockville, MD; Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, Annapolis, MD; Maine Fiberarts, Topsham, ME; Traveling Exhibit, Tokyo, Japan and Lexington, KY.
